Commonly asked questions about your treatment journey

  • Are dental x-rays safe?

Dental x-rays at Crouch Dental are perfectly safe. We use digital x-rays which produce a lower level of radiation and are quick and comfortable.

  • Will I receive dental treatment on the same day as my checkup?

Any required dental treatment will be scheduled by our treatment coordinator who can also discuss financing options with you, if necessary.

  • I am scared about visiting the dentist, can you help?

If you’re a nervous patient then you’ve certainly come to the right place. Our staff are trained to assist nervous patients and we do all we can, including offering pain management, to help you remain calm and relaxed from the moment you enter our clinic to when you leave.

  • Will my teeth be cleaned during my checkup?

To be sure of having your teeth cleaned during a checkup, it’s best to request this service when you book your appointment. However, if you don’t book cleaning in advance,  you can always schedule with our hygienist for a later date.

The importance of dental checkups

At Crouch Hall Dental Care, we recommend that you visit us for a dental check-up every 6 months.

This frequency allows us the perfect opportunity to monitor your dental health and ensures that we spot any potential problems in the earliest stages before they become too serious or expensive.

Sometimes your dentist will recommend that you attend more often, perhaps every 3 months, dependent on your unique oral health requirements. Your dentist will be able to explain the best frequency for you.

What to expect at your dental checkup

The checkup will begin with a couple of x-rays, then you can discuss any concerns you may have with your dentist.

This will be followed by a thorough oral examination and evaluation of your teeth and gums. You will also be given an oral cancer screening. Once the dentist has reviewed your x-rays and discussed your medical and dental history, you will be advised on any treatment needed. We keep a copy on record so you can return for treatments or if you have any concerns about your oral health.

We recommend you visit your Crouch End dentist for a checkup at least once a year. However, if you have recurring gum disease or a medical condition such as diabetes, we may ask you to attend more often, to keep on top of your oral health.

Treating teeth grinding in Crouch End

Chronic headaches may be caused by teeth grinding, which we can treat with ease

During your dental check-up, your dentist will look for tooth wear, which is often a sign of teeth grinding (bruxism). Many patients suffer from this, for many different reasons, and many will have no idea they are even doing it. Teeth grinding can happen as a subconscious habit during the daytime, but it usually occurs during sleep, which is why people are unaware of it.

At Crouch Hall Dental Care we like to look out for signs of teeth grinding because it can cause damage to the teeth if left untreated. Teeth grinding can also cause other side effects such as painful headaches and migraines, which disappear following treatment helping to provide a better quality of life.

The treatment for teeth grinding consists of simply wearing a splint while you sleep. The splints we use are supplied by the experts at S4S Dental Laboratory and are called Sleep Clench Inhibitor (Sci). There are two types, the Sci that can be fitted during your dental appointment, and the Sci+ that is made in the dental laboratory. Your dentist will be able to explain the differences between the two and which would be the most appropriate splint for you.

The SCi splint is made of a clear plastic that fits over the lower front teeth. It is small, unobtrusive, and very comfortable to wear. Patients who are treated with splints for teeth grinding report an improved lifestyle thanks to the elimination of severe headaches, and we notice a big enhancement to the health of their teeth too.
